Malles Venosta ligt in het bovenste deel van het Val Venosta en wordt omringd door de Malles/Malser Heide en de hoogste bergen van de oostelijke Alpen. De Malser Heide is een uniek agrarisch landschap in het Alpengebied, met weiden en graanvelden die worden doorkruist door irrigatiekanalen (Waale).

Het dorp met zijn vele verschillende torens en torentjes is al van verre te herkennen: zo staat de toren van de kapel van San Benedictus aan de rand van het dorp, terwijl de vroegromaanse toren van San Martin, de toren van San Giovanni, de Fröhlichsturm en die van de parochiekerk in het dorpscentrum staan.

Bezienswaardigheden in Mals & omgeving

De Sint-Benedictuskerk in Malles/Mals werd gebouwd in de 8e eeuw en is een van de oudste kerken in Europa die tot op de dag van vandaag volledig bewaard is gebleven. Binnenin zijn Karolingische muurschilderingen uit de 9e eeuw gevonden, die tot de oudste fresco's van Europa behoren.
De opvallende Fröhlichsturm-toren is 33,5 meter hoog en was ooit de donjon van een kasteel, waarvan vandaag de dag nog slechts enkele resten van de muren over zijn. Aan het begin van de 14e eeuw was de toren een zetel van justitie. Een houten trap leidt naar een uitkijkplatform.
De parochiekerk Maria Himmelfahrt werd al in 1292 gebouwd, maar werd steeds weer verbouwd en heeft tegenwoordig voornamelijk gotische kenmerken.
De kerk van San Giovanni werd in 1799 door de Fransen verwoest. Alleen de prachtige Romaanse kerktoren bleef bewaard. Het schip werd omgebouwd tot woongebouw.
De abdij Marienberg ligt op een hoogte van 1.340 meter en is de hoogstgelegen benedictijnenabdij van Europa. Er zijn Romaanse fresco's in de crypte die het bewonderen waard zijn. Het klooster herbergt ook een museum.
De Tartscher Bühel is een heuvel bij Mals, waar waarschijnlijk al in de oudheid een nederzetting was. Tijdens opgravingen werden Romeinse munten, schelpstenen, ijzeren bijlen en een 2500 jaar oude hertenhoorn met een raadselachtige inscriptie gevonden. Tegenwoordig staat er een kleine Romaanse kerk op de heuvel.

Bergbeklimmers en bergbeklimmers zullen verrukt zijn over de Ötztaler Alpen in het oosten, de Ortlergroep in het zuiden en de Sesvennagroep ten westen van Malles/Mals. De typische Waalse paden nodigen uit tot ontspannen wandelingen en trektochten. Gezinnen zullen dol zijn op het kindvriendelijke wandelgebied Watles met een spannend programma voor jong en oud.

Mountainbikers en fietsers komen ook aan hun trekken in de Boven-Venostavallei. Talloze paden van verschillende moeilijkheidsgraden slingeren zich een weg door het schilderachtige landschap en het populaire fietspad langs de oude Romeinse weg Via Claudia Augusta loopt vlak langs Malles/Mals.

In de winter trekt het nabijgelegen skigebied Watles bezoekers met zijn fantastische pistes en prachtige uitzichten. Langlaufers, sneeuwschoenwandelaars en toerskiërs komen ook aan hun trekken in het winterparadijs rond Malles/Mals.
