Houtsnijwerk in Val Gardena
Nog voordat Val Gardena bekend werd als vakantiebestemming in de Dolomieten, was het dal van Val Gardena al beroemd om zijn artistieke houtsnijwerk.
In het verleden was de Dolomietenvallei Val Gardena grotendeels afgesloten van de buitenwereld en de overwegend landelijke bevolking overbrugde de lange winters met houtsnijwerk in de warmte van hun huiskamer. En de extra inkomsten uit de verkoop van het houtsnijwerk waren ook welkom, en zo werd de traditie van houtsnijwerk van generatie op generatie doorgegeven.

De eerste schriftelijke vermeldingen van houtsnijders uit Val Gardena dateren uit de 17e eeuw: Christian Trebinger en Melchior Vinatzer maakten indrukwekkende barokke werken voor de kerken van St. Christina en St. Ulrich - van kruisen en heilige figuren tot kerststallen en altaren. Het houtsnijwerk werd steeds populairder en de distributie steeds georganiseerder en rond 1850 werkte ongeveer de helft van de bevolking van Val Gardena als houtsnijder. Er werden niet alleen sacrale maar ook profane werken gemaakt. De Grödner beweegbare poppen werden bijvoorbeeld tot in Amerika geëxporteerd.

Het Museum Gherdëina in Ortisei biedt een overzicht van de houtsnijtraditie van Val Gardena van de afgelopen eeuwen, van kerststallen tot houten speelgoed. Wie meer geïnteresseerd is in de huidige stand van de houtsnijkunst in Val Gardena moet een omweg maken naar het congrespaleis in Ortisei: Daar presenteert de permanente tentoonstelling Art 52 dagelijks van 9.00 tot 22.00 uur de veelzijdigheid van de kunstenaars en ambachtslieden van Val Gardena. Er is ook de UNIKA groep: veel kunstenaars en ambachtslieden van deze vereniging uit Val Gardena tonen elk jaar hun werk op de UNIKA beeldenbeurs.

Tot op de dag van vandaag is Val Gardena, samen met Laion aan de ingang van het Val Gardena dal, een centrum van houtsnijkunst gebleven, maar er zijn ook getalenteerde houtsnijders in andere gebieden, zoals in het Ahrntal of in het Sarntal. Er is een speciaal kwaliteitszegel van de Kamer van Koophandel van Zuid-Tirol voor zuiver handgemaakt houtsnijwerk uit Zuid-Tirol. Daarnaast is er het merk Val Gardena Art, waarmee producten die 100% in Val Gardena zijn gemaakt volgens traditionele houtbewerkingscriteria zich mogen tooien.
