Kerststallen in Zuid-Tirol
Elk jaar wordt in Zuid-Tirol een eeuwenoud kerstgebruik herhaald. Kort voor kerstavond - de kinderen hebben hun cadeauwensen al lang in een brief aan het Christuskind kenbaar gemaakt - halen de Zuid-Tirolers de kerststallen uit de kelder of van zolder.
Dan gaat de hele familie aan de slag om het goede stuk op te hangen. De meeste kerststallen uit Zuid-Tirol zijn erfstukken en handgemaakt. Ze nemen vaak de halve kamer in beslag, zo groot zijn ze. Andere zijn zo klein dat kinderen graag poppenkastvoorstellingen opvoeren met Jezus, Maria en Jozef die niet altijd trouw zijn aan Kerstmis.
Wat ze allemaal gemeen hebben is de landelijke omgeving. Ossen en ezels staan in de stal, die direct aan een kleine boerderij vastzit. De ramen hebben vaak klassieke rood-wit geblokte gordijnen en de boeren dragen - zoals het hoort - knickerbockers en blauwe schorten en de boerinnen hoofddoeken en hooikappen.
In grotere kerststallen worden hele landschappen afgebeeld: Kleine kastelen waar de beter geklede "heren" wonen, ambachtslieden die hun werk doen in de kleine stadjes, kleine boerderijen met herders, boeren, koeien en schapen, kleine beekjes die van de bergen naar beneden stromen in het dal, weiden bedekt met mos en leien daken beschermd met steentjes. De kerststallen in Zuid-Tirol zijn ware kunstwerken, waar duizenden uren werk in is gaan zitten.
