Grappig en wild: carnaval in Zuid-Tirol
Dan toont Zuid-Tirol zich wild en origineel en verdrijft de winter zoals vroeger. In vroegere eeuwen werd het begin van de lente in Zuid-Tirol met bijna nog meer vreugde en verlangen tegemoet gezien dan tegenwoordig. De winters waren immers vaak erg streng, voedsel was soms schaars en de lokale bevolking vermoedde spoken en demonen in de lange winternachten.
Om een einde aan de winter te maken, kwamen mensen in het dorp bijeen voor dwaze optochten, verkleedden zich en verdreven de boze geesten, de kou en de sneeuw met luide kreten en fantasierijke maskers.
Ook nu nog worden in veel Zuid-Tiroolse dorpen de oude carnavalsgebruiken in ere gehouden, ook al gaat het in de 21e eeuw niet meer zozeer om het verdrijven van de winter, maar meer om de gezelligheid. De bekendste traditionele carnavalsgebruiken zijn de Egetmannoptocht in Tramin en de Zussl-race in Prad am Stelvio in Val Venosta.
Carnavalsfeesten in Zuid-Tirol
In de carnavalsmaand februari, vooral op Donderdag Onheil, zijn er traditionele carnavalsoptochten in Zuid-Tirol, maar ook levendige, moderne carnavalsfeesten, bijvoorbeeld in de volgende plaatsen:
- Prad aan de Stelvio in het Val Venosta: Zusslrennen
- Tramin in Zuid-Tirol Zuid: Egetmann parade
- Obereggen en Nova Levante in het Eggental: Carnavalsoptochten
- Val Senales: kindercarnaval en carnavalsballen
- Toblach, Sexten, Sesto in het Hochpustertal: carnavalsoptochten
- Ortisei, Selva Gardena en S. Cristina di Valgardena: carnavalsoptochten
- In heel Zuid-Tirol: Vette maandag feesten
