Prinselijk kasteel in Merano
Ooit prinses zijn is iets waar elk meisje vast wel eens van gedroomd heeft. Tijdens je Zuid-Tirol vakantie kun je deze droom van je dochter in ieder geval gedeeltelijk waarmaken met een bezoek aan het Provinciaal Kasteel in Merano. Het werd in de 15e eeuw gebouwd en diende uitsluitend als residentie voor prinsen, vorsten en hertogen. Hier werden gasten ontvangen, banketten gehouden en de desbetreffende vorst resideerde in het kasteel.
In de afgelopen decennia is het kasteel uitgebreid gerestaureerd en gerenoveerd door de stad Merano en de provincie Zuid-Tirol. Nu straalt het in nieuwe pracht en praal en herbergt het meubels, kunstwerken, meubilair en alledaagse voorwerpen uit de tijd van de grote vorsten van Tirol. Hemelbedden, tegelkachels, prinselijke kamers en nog veel meer: het spreekt echt tot de verbeelding!
Trouwens: de bouw van het stadskasteel in Merano had waarschijnlijk romantische redenen. Aartshertog Sigmund bouwde het kasteel in 1470 uit liefde voor zijn hoogopgeleide vrouw Eleonore uit Schotland om het leven in de toen nog woeste Alpen aangenamer te maken.
