Kasteel Runkelstein
Je bevindt je hier op oneffen en vooral historisch terrein: de kasseien en grensmuren van het steile pad dateren immers uit dezelfde periode waarin het kasteel werd gebouwd, namelijk uit de 13e eeuw. In die tijd werd hoog op de porfierrots Runkelstein een kasteel gebouwd om de handel tussen Bolzano en het Sarntal te controleren.
In de 14e eeuw kochten de Bolzaanse kooplieden Franz en Niklaus Vandoies het kasteel. Om hun kosmopolitisme te tonen en dichter bij de adel te komen, gaven ze opdracht tot het schilderen van uitgebreide fresco's. Vandaag de dag behoren ze tot de grootste bewaard gebleven fresco 's. Vandaag de dag behoren ze tot de grootste bewaard gebleven frescocyclus uit de Middeleeuwen. De fresco's tonen scènes uit het dagelijks leven van hofdames en ridders, toernooien en jachtmomenten. Geen wonder dat het kasteel ook wel Bilderburg wordt genoemd.
In de zomer vinden er veel muzikale evenementen plaats op de binnenplaats van het kasteel en er staan ook theatervoorstellingen op het programma. Een bezoek aan het kasteel is een must voor cultuurliefhebbers. Runkelstein ligt aan de ingang van het Sarntal bij Bolzano in het zuiden van Zuid -Tirol en is te bereiken via een kort maar steil voetpad. Er rijden ook pendelbussen naar het kasteel vanaf de parkeerplaats aan de weg.
